When I’m teaching my students to shade I ask them to identify the light and dark areas of a drawing. In my fashion class students will color a value scale and use this scale to identify the light and dark areas of a drawing.

This is a great exercise to warm-up your eyes to see the values of a color. Keep it simple and most importantly have fun!
