I like to teach art foundations in my fashion classes. To help students understand how to create value changes I have them create a gradient chart using their pencil.

This helps them learn how much pressure they need to apply to create a value. Starting with pencil is a great way to keep things simple and it allows your student to really grasp the idea of what values are and how to see them.
