Shading is the process of adding values to create the illusion of form. You can learn how to add value in many ways when using Procreate.

Start with a simple drawing. I like to have students start with a shape or an image.

Add a layer on top of your drawing, so that you don’t mess up your drawing.

Now, choose where your light source is located. Keep it simple by adding it to the top left or right.

Imagine a beam of light shining onto your drawing from the light source.

Where does the light touch your drawing? Where does the not touch your drawing?

In the areas where you know there is no light, you will add your shading.
