Lois Mailou Jones

In order to gain recognition for her works Jones decided to pursue art. Some of her most famous artworks are of African masks. Eventually she incorporated textile-like designs and portraits of people she met during her travels as a U.S. Cultural Ambassador to Africa.

Archibald Motley Jr.

Archibald Motley painted detailed scenes of black night life in America during the 1930s and on. Many of his scenes are full of black people in both public spaces and intimate spaces. Check out a few of his artworks below.

William H. Johnson

In class our weekly African American studies class we are reviewing artist, William H. Johnson. His life was filled with world travel and art exploration. If you have a chance to read about his life, you can review this article here. Thousands of his paintings were donated to the Smithsonian American Art Museum after he passed away.
